The MH-6 Little Bird, flown by the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, is used to transport special operations forces to rooftops or narrow streets. (Hughes) The MH-6 Little Bird, based on the McDonnell Douglas MD369, and its attack variant, the AH-6, carry three commandos in bench seats mounted on the helicopter's side doors.
Army Little Bird
The Little Bird was originally designed as a reconnaissance helicopter for Army armored units, but since the early 1980s it has been used almost exclusively by the special operations community.

It has a range of 250 nautical miles without fuel. The AH-6 Little Bird Gun light attack helicopter is combat tested and proven. Armed with guns, Hellfire missiles and a 2.75-inch FFAR, it provides armed helicopter support for special ground and air operations. The AH-6 has an unrefueled range of 250 nautical miles. All these versions were equipped with the Allison T-63 252 SHP engine.
Later versions were based on the successful Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) MD-500/MD-530 series helicopters. The latest versions of these aircraft, the AH-6J attack helicopter and the MD-530F-based insertion and extraction transport MH-6J, have more powerful engines and better avionics, including built-in GPS/inertial navigation and forward-looking. infrared (FLIR). The AH-6J can be armed with two seven-barreled 2.75-inch rocket launchers and two 7.62mm M134 miniguns. The bird can also be armed with a .50 Cal. machine gun, MK19 40mm grenade launcher, Hellfire missiles and Air-to-Air Stinger (ATAS) missiles.
The MH-6 Little Bird entered popular culture in the book and movie Black Hawk Down, which depicted the MH-6 Little Birds transporting Delta Force Soldiers to the overrun city of Mogadishu. The Army may replace the Little Birds that have been in use by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment for nearly 40 years with the winner of a new armed reconnaissance helicopter competition. Catch? Only one of the two competing helicopters actually carries troops, a key requirement for the Little Bird replacement.
In 1981, after the failure of a US hostage rescue mission in Tehran, the US Army established Task Force 160, an elite helicopter unit designed to support special forces on the ground. The unit received its first A/MH-6 helicopter in 1983; since then, "Little Birds" continued to serve the flight unit. Small and nimble, helicopters fly low to cover their appearance and avoid enemy fire.
The army flies in two versions of Little Birds. The attack version of the AH-6 has a crew of two and is armed with M134 7.62mm mortars, 2.75in unguided rockets, Hellfire anti-tank missiles and M230 30mm autocannons.

The MH-6, on the other hand, is an unarmed assault transport designed to carry up to six Army Ranger, Navy SEAL or Delta Force troops. The MH-6 can land on streets and rooftops and uses a high-speed rope system to quickly bring special operators to the ground.
The U.S. Army is now accepting the latest version of the Little Birds, the AH/MH-6 Block III, which includes a new six-bladed rotor and improved payload, speed and flight controls.
The Block III helos are expected to last until the early 2030s, but the immediate plan is to replace them with the winner of the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA). This armed helicopter has an emphasis on range and reconnaissance capabilities. The Army will choose the winner between two aircraft, the Sikorsky Raider X and the Bell 360 Invictus, in 2024.
The Raider X includes a cargo/passenger compartment behind the cockpit that can carry troops or weapons. This makes it a suitable replacement for the A/MH-6, even though it is a larger aircraft.
Hybrid Power Could Keep The Little Bird Helo Flying
The Raider X and Invictus are probably good replacements for the AH-6. The problem is that the MH-6 is a troop carrier, and while the Raider X has passenger space for up to six soldiers, the Invictus has no such capability for carrying passengers.
Says the Raider X will replace the A/MH-6 fleet if it wins the FARA competition, but a lack of passenger space means the Army will have to look elsewhere if the Invictus wins. That solution could be a modified commercial aircraft. Developing a new warplane is not possible because the A/MH-6 fleet has only 51 aircraft.
Another option is to ask the Army to simply build the plane, which Boeing is producing in the fourth-generation A/MH-6. Boeing advertised the new Little Birds on its website, and the Block III aircraft will use the new airframe. However, the Army wanted to move away from the 1960s airframe, which it believed was superior from a design standpoint.
The Little Bird is also slow by today's standards (126 knots), while Lockheed Martin claims the Raider X is capable of 220 knots.
