Marine Barracks, Washington, DC is at the corner of 8th and I Street, Southeast of Washington, DC. Established in 1801, it is a National Historic Landmark, the oldest post in the United States Marine Corps, the official residence of the Commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806, and the Corps' main ceremonial grounds. It is home to the US Marine Corps ("The Captain's Own") and the US Marine Band ("The President's Own"). Marines at the barracks perform ceremonial missions in and around the National Capital Region as well as overseas. Security is also provided at designated locations around Washington, DC as needed, and barracks officers are part of the White House Social Assistance Program.

Washington's Marine Barracks and Chiefs Historic Home were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. A 6-acre (2.4 ha) property and eight buildings contributed to the listing.

In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson and Lieutenant Colonel William Ward Burrows, head of the Marine Corps, rode horses around the new capital to find a suitable location for the Marines near the Washington Navy Yard.

When the British burned Washington during the War of 1812, they also took the Marine barracks. Traditionally, in the Marine Corps, out of respect for the brave display of the Marines at the Battle of Bladsburg, the British refrained from burning the barracks and the Commandant's House.

Although neither Admiral George Cockburn nor General Robert Ross specifically referred to the Marines in their conversation with the wounded Commodore Joshua Barney, it is now recognized that the engagement extended to Barney's 300 Marines and 103 Marines.

The Marines carried three pieces of 12-pounder guns to act as the core of the Barney line. The Marines would not have held their ground had it not been for the cannons that scattered grapeshot and flying canisters from the 85th Light Infantry Regiment. This is supported by the fact that the Baltimore artillery (which also covered the bridge at the Washington Turnpike) on the Marines' right only fired a volley in an attempt to prevent Lieutenant General William Thornton from crossing the bridge. Round shot is, in general, ineffective against dispersed troops like the 85th light infantry.

The seamen, under the command of Captain Barney and the Marines, were praised for their excellent behavior on this occasion. No soldier could stand better; and the fire of artillery and musketry was described in the last severe degree. Captain Barney himself, and Captain Miller, of the Marine Corps, especially, gained much reputation besides; and their evident courage caused great regret that their efforts could not be sustained by the rest of the army.

The "last stand" of sailors and marines to this day is the photograph taken by Colonel Charles Waterhouse of Captain Miller's navy manning two of the three Gribeuaval 12-pounder cannons. Three cannons were transported from Marine barracks to the battlefield to cover a strategic bridgehead. This event is also noted by sculptor Joanna Blake of Cottage City in "Undaunted in Battle." It shows an injured Barney being helped by a sailor and surrounded by a sailor who probably represents a member of the navy. The background shows a wheeled cannon, probably one of the three taken into battle by the Marines.

The Marine Corps Institute moved into barracks from its former home at Quantico Marine Barracks in 1920. The Drum and Bugle Corps has been based at the barracks since its formation in 1934.

The barracks complex is one of the oldest government buildings in continuous use in Washington, DC, although some sources dispute whether the White House is a year older.

Although traditionally known as "the oldest post in the Corps", the Marines served at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston a year earlier, although they did not have a permanent detachment until 1805 or barracks until 1810, and it was empty in 1974.

Considered the birthplace of the Corps, Tin Tavern was used for one of the Continental Marines' first recruiting drives in 1775.

Marines assigned to the DC barracks must meet strict standards on height, weight and background checks, while performing in ceremonial parades, funerals, and other ceremonies for presidential and other national dignitaries. During the summer months, a sunset parade is held every Tuesday night at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, Virginia near Arlington National Cemetery. In addition, a night parade is held at the Barracks every Friday night from late spring to late summer. As of 2018, the sunset parade from the barracks has been broadcast on Facebook Live on select dates via the official US Marine Corps FB page, weather permitting.
