Our family visits the Kings Dominion KOA Park when visiting, and always wants to enjoy Kings Island from a campground perspective instead of staying at different hotels.

Review: Kings Island Camp Cedar Cabins (winter 2021)

We had originally planned to return to Camp Cedar in July 2021 for Coasterstock; However, a combination of problems delayed the opening of the park, and we were rebooked at the hotel.

When our family evaluated our 2021 Winterfest options, we chose to visit Kings Island again. So we looked at the rates for Camp Cedar and found them to be very affordable for the shoulder season. We booked a combination Friday-Sunday stay (2 nights) to enjoy the park for two nights.

We called ahead and learned that about an hour earlier than scheduled was no problem since the unit was vacant the night before. Check in was incredibly easy and we checked into the cabin after checking into the lodge.

The lodge is quite spacious with a large open space for the customer service area. Beyond is a shop that offers the usual camping needs and souvenirs. They also offer a small coffee shop (The Dry Bean) that includes gelato and quick baked goods. Outside the shop is a typical large lodge-type room with comfortable sofas and a fireplace. At the end, the building has an iron wood grill and faucet. Here you will find a full service bar with a variety of limited menu items.

We then proceeded to check out and settled into our cabin. We choose the Hickory Cottage, which offers built-in bunk beds for our kids, as well as a queen bed in the loft and a separate queen bed in the back room. There was also a sleeper sofa in the main seating area for additional sleeping accommodation for up to eight guests. We were assigned cabin 438 on the first loop behind the lodge.

The first thing we noticed upon arriving at the cabin area was how they incorporated the terrain into the park, which we loved. Not quite sure how much forest there was before, but there are also choice trees that have been left untouched, which makes for a nice scene, especially when they all grow up.

The downside was the campground in general, and our cabin in particular, is really close to I-71. So all night long you hear trucks driving by.

We then proceeded to check out the cabin. The whole unit had a general whitewashed decor and felt very new and beachy.

There was a small sitting area with a love seat/sleeper sofa and a large flat screen TV. Next door was a kitchen stocked with full size appliances. We built box beds in the hall in the middle of our unit. Opposite there was a bathroom with a full shower. At the rear of the unit was a separate bedroom with a queen size bed. Then above that was another queen bed.

As a traveler, you usually don't bring hangers with you. There were no hooks in any of the closets, which meant nothing could be hung.

The biggest issue was the pocket door for the bathroom. It was also hard to figure out how to get it out, and there was no way the kids could open it in the wall. When the door was pulled, it did not align with the lock plate. The locking mechanism was also defective and did not work well. There was also an instance where one of our kids locked it, and then got stuck in the bathroom and couldn't release it due to the bad alignment of the door. If you didn't lock the door, there was a big gap that made it easy for anyone entering the cabin to see the toilet.

Appliances and kitchen were great. It was great to have a cold drink in the fridge waiting for you after a long day at the park. Some problems we had was that they don't offer you anything to make coffee except a coffee machine. No filters. Coffee is not ground. Nothing. This may be due to the Covid protocol, but in today's age we usually always find coffee kits available in hotel rooms if they are not pod style.

Also, one of the things guests should do after checking out is to load and run the dishwasher. However, they don't give you pods to operate the machine. It would also be nice if they include a broom and pan so they can clean themselves and help with housework.

Our first night at Camp Cedar, we chose to take the included shuttle to Kings Island. Pickup was at the front of the lodge, and they will drop you off at the Kings Island Pickup/Drop Off area behind the parking lot near the Kings Island marquee sign. No big deal, and a relatively short walk to get to the front gates, but surprisingly the park doesn't offer shuttle drop-off access at the gates like Kings Dominion. Shuttles run up to 30 minutes after park closing, so be aware of additional walking and shuttle demand.

After our first night on Kings Island, and back to Camp Cedar, we discovered that the entire block was without power. So we weren't sure if our keycards would even work to get us into our cabin. Before heading back to our cabin, we stopped at guest services, knowing there was a good chance there would be no heat. However, the staff was rather unhelpful and brushed us aside.
