WASHINGTON — Major changes to the combat physical exam will affect every soldier, officials announced Sept. 27.

Changes approved in fiscal year 2020 include official testing standards for all soldiers, each tailored to a specific military occupation. Additionally, all military initial training (Officer and enlisted) will take the ACFT as a graduation requirement, and the hand thrust will replace the hand release thrust.

New Changes To Acft Being Rolled Out To Impact All Soldiers

The latest adjustments come after initial messages that the age- and gender-neutral ACFT would replace the nearly 40-year-old Physical Fitness Test, or APFT. Since then, officials have evaluated the ACFT standards and made necessary changes and modifications to ensure that the fitness test is a true match for the readiness and combat skills of soldiers in the new era.

"Physical fitness is the foundation of constant readiness," Sgt. said Maj. Michael A. Greenstone. "We need highly trained, disciplined and physical soldiers capable of winning on any battlefield. The ACFT, specifically linked to joint combat missions, will help assess and improve the individual preparation of the force."

At first, leaders based their standards on "scientific data and the need to revolutionize the physical culture of our forces," said Major Gen. Lonnie Hibbard, commander of the US Army Basic Training Center. Now, as new information becomes available, "soldiers are looking for ways to improve how the score aligns with what they do in the field."

The new changes are part of a two-part decision-making process based on science and results, said Whitfield East, Ph.D., EdD., a research physiologist at CIMT.

Hibbard added that the special battalions were chosen to sample nearly all Soldier MOSs representing the active duty, National Guard and Reserve components.

In fiscal year 2019, data was collected from 63 battalions, or approximately 17,000 soldiers, participating in the first phase of ACFT implementation. This information is then evaluated for changes to be made the following year.

"It was very difficult for us to grade the arm raise (push-up) because of many factors, including the movement of the shoulders," East said, adding, "Instead of raising the arms, Soldiers extend the their lower backs and raised their chests. They landed on the ground, and never returned to the original position."

The push change is a deliberate effort to help undercover officers conduct field tests, Hibbard said.

"Tests should be graded by qualified Level 1 graders," Hibbard said, adding that the manual release push during the first test created too much ambiguity in the grading process.

Hibbard said Soldiers who take the arm extension push test "extend their whole arm" and eliminate the uncertainty of the assessment. "Especially at 5:30 in the morning when they're trying to figure out if (the soldier's) hand fell 4 inches off the grass or not."

Another factor to replace the hand release component is to "establish the cadence and reduce the number of repetitions," East said.

Although the ACFT tests Soldiers' physical fitness, being active is only one aspect of preparing for the test, officials said. By reducing the number of repetitions, soldiers are less likely to get injured, East says, and ACFT leads to a 40-50% reduction in repetitions compared to APFT.

"Each repetition requires more strength to push against more resistance," says East. "That means we can get the same amount of work done with fewer iterations."
