Cab Company Lawton Ok - LAWTON, OK () - The Lawton City Council voted Tuesday to allow cab companies to set their own fares to make it easier to compete with ridesharing companies that use apps.
City council members and local cab companies got together last week to talk about ways to level the playing field.

City Council member Jay Burk and the owner of AmeriCab said many of the rules the city has for cab drivers are outdated. Since Tride, a ride-sharing app, arrived in Lawton late last year, local cab companies have been calling on the city to either regulate the app or ease cab laws.

They hope this is the first step in updating the laws and allowing these local businesses to thrive as the ridesharing industry grows.
"The current city code, if you print it out, is about 12 pages long. We're settled on the T," said Candy Hanza, owner of AmeriCab.
Hanza says she expects the city to work with them over the next few weeks to reduce these pages of rules.
"There is no other company in the city being told what color vehicles they should drive, who they should hire," Hanza said. "They have to audition to be a taxi driver. No other company in town has to do that. And what's more, how much can we charge."

But at the Lawton City Council meeting, fare regulations were streamlined. Taxi companies can now set their own fares, but the city and customers must be informed of the fare in advance.
"Visitors to the City of Lawton who arrive from our airports and stay at our hotels don't understand why it's cheaper to go from the hotel to the airport than from the airport to the casino," Hanza said. "It doesn't make sense and we have a hard time explaining it. Well, you just crossed that creek over there. They don't understand. Neither do we."
City Council member Jay Burk said when he started looking at the ordinances at the committee meeting, he realized what the corporations were dealing with.
"Just some really archaic rules," Burk said. "From the test that said how many churches in Lawton, how many libraries. Those are really tricky questions."

Hanza says the taxi driver test is one of the rules they want to scrap.
"We haven't looked into this in a long time and you know, until things like this happen and technology changes things, you don't change," Burk said.
The ordinance to allow businesses to name their own rates will go into effect by the end of the week.
Also, during Tuesday night's meeting, a proposal was made to use the $600,000 left over from the 2012 capital improvement project to be used for a sidewalk on the Gore Bridge that spans I-44. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has offered to pay for half of the $1.3 million project. The board wanted more details on the plan and will bring it back to the agenda at the next board meeting. Darcy Mohr was behind the wheel of her AmeriCab van on the Northwest Quanah Parker Trailway Saturday when a Jeep driving the wrong way slammed her and her four passengers head-on. Three of those passengers, along with the driver of the Jeep, were hospitalized and later released. Moore died shortly after being transported to an Oklahoma City hospital.
"Darcy was so funny. She was someone that everyone liked and you really didn't know what to expect from her overnight. She was a funny girl," said Candy Hanza, owner of AmeriCab Taxi Service. .
"She was eager to please everyone she worked for and with whom she worked. And when Darcy didn't answer the phone, we knew something was wrong," Hanza said.
Her phone went unanswered when police said a jeep driver collapsed on the Northwest Quanah Parker Trailway and swerved into oncoming traffic. They hit a large sign and then Mohr's van, with no indication of braking.

The investigation is still ongoing. The police have already mapped every inch of the scene to find out what happened. Now they turn their attention to the driver of the jeep to find out exactly what made him pass out.
"This is something we are not 100% sure yet. The individual driving the jeep had no history of fainting or loss of consciousness like this. We are still awaiting the OSBI toxicology reports," Lt. Brad Davis explained , Lawton Police Department.
"We won't be able to fill Darcy. We will find a body to fill, but we won't fill Darcy," Hanza said.
